About the Author

HELENA MARIA VIRAMONTES is the acclaimed author of a short story collection, The Moths and Other Stories (Arte Público Press, 1995), and two novels, Under the Feet of Jesus (Dutton, 1995) and Their Dogs Came with Them (Washington Square Press, 2008). She is the coeditor, with María Herrera-Sobek, of two collections: Chicana Creativity and Criticism (University of New Mexico, 1987) and Chicana Rites: On Word and Film (1994). She is the recipient of the 2006 Luis Leal Award and the John Dos Passos Award for Literature, and her short stories and essays have been widely anthologized and adopted for classroom use and university study. Viramontes lives in Ithaca, New York, where she is a professor in the Department of English at Cornell University.
