Mummy Man is a good guy, but the other creatures AREN’T so good. It’s up to Wen, Tanya, and Mummy Man (and his pet turtle, Frank) to stop the creatures from turning the town into the nexus for an all-out monster invasion.

About the Author

Just because Steve Behling sleeps with the lights on, doesn’t mean he’s afraid of monsters. Or maybe it does? Anyway. Obsessed with comic books and old horror movies since he was a kid, Steve loves to tell stories. Some of his works include the original middle grade novel Agent Stitch: A Study in Slime, the Marvel Monsters Unleashed chapter book series, and many others. Steve lives in a top secret subterranean lair with his wife, two human children, and awesome shelter dog, Loomis, who is afraid of monsters because he is smart. 

Robb Mommaerts is a cartoonist and illustrator who always hoped that his hobby of doodling bizarre creatures in school notebooks would eventually turn into a career. From his basement dungeon, he’s been hopping between the realms of children’s book illustration, comic books, game art, and character design. He’s recently had the opportunity to illustrate the Klawde: Evil Alien Warlord Cat series, written by Johnny Marciano and Emily Chenoweth. Before that he has completed eight picture book titles and provided artwork for several top-selling tabletop game projects. He lives in Wisconsin with his wife, two kids, and a dog.

A spooky summer fueled by popsicle pancakes.

Wendell, ironically nicknamed Waffles by his mom for his love of pancakes, shares the tale of a summer spent at his grandfather’s house in Shriekport, Maine. Grandpa worked doing special effects on all kinds of horror movies back in the day, leading to a bond with his fanboy grandson. Waffles is helping Grandpa clean out his memorabilia-filled basement along with Tanya, a girl his age who is working to repay a window she broke. Beasties from Grandpa’s movie career, including zombie squirrels; Glaarg, a rampaging giant lizard; and their ringleader, a vampire clown named Count Wackula, come to life and antagonize the three of them. A resurrected mummy who dubs himself Mummy Man and a turtle sidekick named Frank arrive to help. The story, propelled by one narrow, lighthearted escape from danger after another, has frequent illustrations as well as pop-up boxes with trivia about the movies Grandpa worked on. Mummy Man does most of the fighting, though Frank the turtle participates and even steals the show a number of times. The invented movie trivia and menagerie of horror-inspired creatures are the rewards for following Waffles and Tanya’s wacky adventures; character development comes second to spectacle and humor. The human cast appears to be White. Final art not seen.
