Leonella and her niece Antonia have arrived at a Madrid church to hear the sermon of priest, Ambrosio. Antonia's Grandfather is the Marquis de las Cisternas, who was unhappy with his son's marriage and has cut off their pension. Lorenzo vows to marry Antonia, but she is pregnant with the child of Raymond de las Cisternas and Ambrosio turns her over to the prioress of her abbey for punishment.

About the Author

Matthew Gregory Lewis, who is more commonly known as M.G Lewis (1775-1818) was an English writer, diplomat, and politician. Predominantly known for his work in the gothic horror genre, M.G Lewis wrote novels, poems, short stories, and works of nonfiction. Because his work often featured graphic depictions of sex and violence, Lewis gained almost an infamous reputation; his most popular novel, The Monk: A Romance was banned in England but still became a best-selling novel. Lewis was beloved for his bold and scandalous novels. His sinister writing has earned him a legacy of being a major figure in gothic fiction.
