About the Author

Dr. Latorial Faison, professor, poet, independent scholar, and sr. military spouse, is a native of rural Southampton County, Virginia. A graduate of the integrated Southampton High School, she went on to complete undergraduate and graduate degrees in English Literature at the University of Virginia and VA TECH. She completed a doctoral degree in Education at Virginia State University, which prompted research on The Missed Education of the Negro.

Faison is a published poet and author of several books, including Mother to Son, I Am Woman, LOVE POEMS, and the Amazon kindle best-selling trilogy collection, 28 Days of Poetry Celebrating Black History. Her literary work has been featured in the NAACP Image Award-winning book Keeping the Faith: Stories of Love, Courage, Healing, and Hope from Black America and Forging Freedom. She is a recipient of the Tom Howard Poetry Prize and finalist and semi-finalist for literary prizes such as the North Street Book Prize, the Gwendolyn Brooks and CAVE CANEM Poetry Prizes, as well as the Hudson, Stevenson, and Wheeler Poetry Prizes.

A Pushcart nominee, Faison has been published in Obsidian: Literature and Art in the African Diaspora, Artemis Journal, PRAIRIE SCHOONER, West Trestle Review, PENUMBRA, Deep South Magazine, Southern Women's Review, Typehouse Literary Journal, and elsewhere. Faison, an Assistant Professor, teaches on the faculty of a Historically Black College and University, Virginia State University. She is married to her high school sweetheart, COL Carl Faison. Together, they have three sons.
