About the Author

Jodie wanted to be a genie when she grew up, then she discovered they could spend centuries locked in a bottle and decided to write about them instead.

When not writing about Ruby’s adventures, Jodie has adventures of her own. As a traveler, she’s crossed the Rajasthan desert on a camel, plied Asian rivers on an elephant, driven a tuk tuk in Sri Lanka, dined in a haunted Scottish castle, climbed an active volcano on a tiny Pacific island, swam horses in the sea, dived with sharks in Sydney Harbor, parachuted from an old Cessna biplane, visited witch doctors in Africa, and explored overgrown temples in Cambodia, bat caves in outback Australia, and underwater caverns in Jamaica.

Jodie grew up in Australia, lived for a time in London, and has now settled in Colorado with her husband and their adopted cat, Lola

Alongside the thrill of Ruby's discoveries about her genie heritage and abilities is a plot with danger, dilemmas and plenty of action. Brownlee keeps the story moving right to the last page. Young fantasy fans will find this one a nice blend of the familiar (magic carpets, genies, and a magic mail-service) with the unusual (including Hobbit-like creatures called Spriggans who dwell in the sands of the oasis). A great read.

It is a fabulous children's book and one that adults will enjoy reading with their kids. The whole Ruby concept is witty, bright, magical, clever and very addictive.

Ruby and Jaffa are believable children from different worlds. The action plays at a cinematic pace, and swoops and zips along like the carpet... Throughout the novel the author has had a lovely play with language: a camel called Babaganoosh; the sand people called Spriggans and a parrot/genie/best friend called Avalon.
