About the Author

Antonia F. Chen, MD, MBA received her bachelor of science degree from Yale University. She then received her medical degree from UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson, where she graduated with Distinction in Research and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Antonia also received her master of business administration degree from Rutgers Business School and graduated as a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. She is currently an orthopedic resident at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to clinical duties, her research interests are in arthroplasty and periprosthetic joint infections; she has delivered many podium presentations and posters on the national stage. Antonia has also received numerous awards during residency, including research awards and the Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award. She has served as a resident liaison for the membership committee in the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Antonia hopes to pursue a rewarding career as an academic arthroplasty surgeon.

Description: This book describes disorders, injuries, and surgical procedures of the musculoskeletal system for lay persons.
Purpose: The purpose according is to educate readers who want to have a better understanding of the musculoskeletal system and its disorders.
Audience: The audience is the general public.
Features: The 10 chapters explain the anatomy and function of the skeleton and muscles and briefly describe physical examinations, diagnostic studies, and treatment options. They also cover topics such as physical therapy, pain medicine, antibiotics, and anticoagulants. A typical example is the description of carpal tunnel syndrome and how it may be managed. (However, there is no information on the role of electromyogram and nerve conduction velocity studies included in this case.) The illustrations and radiographs are of good quality.
Assessment: This book attempts to help lay persons understand some of the issues of the musculoskeletal system, and the information is accurate. However, since much of the information is brief and is not always specific to a given condition, it might be more productive for readers to seek information online. This book may not be worth all the time and effort a young, ambitious, future orthopedist has put into it.
