Overview

This Pacific Northwest, historical fiction begins in the 1920s and reaches into the present age. Follow the lives of Charmaine's descendants as they build their future in the Land of Giants and face the obstacles that time, nature, and men put in front of them.

An individual's ancestry means very little in comparison to the type of person they choose to become. The same applies to cities and nations. What promises will the future really deliver to the inhabitants of this region? Will it provide a paradise on earth or something altogether different?

Charmaine's grandson, Gautier, feels the stirrings to discover his own path and better comprehend the world of his Nana and his Native American Ancestors. Over time, he crosses paths with his good friend Viho, his Hawaiian-Filipino wife Moani, and a mountain lion called Kitty. Renamed "Wind Shadow" by Viho, Gautier faces many obstacles that include the Great Depression, the Tillamook Burn, and World War II. Nation building and survival test his very mettle. How then will Wind Shadow engage his greatest foe-- a man who challenges his values and threatens to destroy the family from the inside out?

About the Author

Alina Patterson calls herself a “kaleidoscope;” the image she projects comes from mirrors, broken pieces of glass, colorful insights, and a myriad of experiences. She uses all these elements and holds them up in the light to make new patterns. She fell in love with storytelling in third grade and can’t resist a good tale. Alina Patterson holds a Master of Liberal Studies at Rollins College. Her background includes science, nursing, counseling, motherhood, and more.

Fascinated by the world around her, she brings geology, science, sociology, psychology, faith, and history to life. Her passions include writing, singing, music, animals, community resilience, and the great outdoors. She currently enjoys peaceful days in Hawaii where she takes the time to write and join her beloved sea turtles for a swim in a quiet lagoon. If you find her there she might just tell you a short story or two. You also might see her giving her little dog a ride on her back, where he rides her like a boogie board. If you find her alone, listen quietly, she may be singing to her turtle friends or the One Who Sees All.
