About the Author

Washington Irving (1783–1859) was one of the first authors in America to recognize creative possibilities for fiction in the new nation’s folklore and history. Under the pseudonyms Diedrich Knickerbocker and Geoffrey Crayon, Irving wrote a fanciful History of New York, and the sketches and stories collected in The Sketch Book, Bracebridge Hall, and Tales of a Traveller.
