Overview

The dominant situation is one of intense anguish: a poor country clergyman, proud, learned, sternly conscientious, is accused of a felony, and the pressure of family want makes his guilt seem only too probable. His own agony, his wife's dread, and the distress of his daughter, affianced to the son of a neighbouring landowner, are the elements of a profound tragedy. The ecclesiastical society of The Warden and its successors, Mr. Harding, Mrs. Proudie and the rest, make their last appearance here.

About the Author

About The Author
Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) was a popular Victorian author and novelist. The son of a lawyer who was landed gentry, Trollope became interested in the doings of the higher English social classes as a young man. Despite its relatively high social background, the family fell into poverty after the father's farming ventures failed. The Trollope family eventually fled to Belgium to escape arrest for unpaid debts. After serving a tutor on the continent, Trollope was offered a clerkship with the General Post Office in Ireland. The position offered a reasonable income which allowed him to pursue writing.
