About the Author

Steven D Waldman is an internationally recognized expert and pioneer in the specialty of Pain Medicine. Dr Waldman has received numerous awards and honors and is the author of over twenty textbooks and numerous academic articles on the specialty of Pain Management. His main clinical work is as an interventional pain management physician as well as being an active member of the medical staff at Truman Medical Center at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He is a former President of the Society of Pain Practice Management (SPPM)

Description: This book is intended to present the diagnosis and management of common knee problems using a case-based approach. The book is exceptionally well organized with each chapter beginning with a case, key points, science behind the diagnosis, diagnosis, and management. Using the same approach to each clinical problem renders the book easy to read and to follow. Every chapter ends with high-yield takeaways which summarize the major points to be mastered from the chapter. The majority of references from each chapter are from the author of the book and reference other textbooks. There is minimal use of original articles as references.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to present an approach to diagnosing common knee conditions in a clear and understandable fashion. The author used a case-based approach that is comprehensive and easy to understand. The book is primarily directed to medical students as practitioners will find the information too basic for their level of education. The approach is successful as the goals for conveying the information are met. The online version only adds the ability to make notes and does not contain hyperlinks. The only purpose of the online book is to serve those who do not want to read the book in print format.
Audience: This book is intended for medical students and physical therapy students due to basic presentation. The case-based approach is excellent and makes the information easier to understand and remember. Each chapter is also organized in a similar fashion rendering the book easy to read for a medical student. The author of the textbook is a credible authority and cites himself throughout the book.
Features: The book presents 15 common conditions of the knee. Each chapter begins with symptomatology. Based upon the symptoms, a differential diagnosis is presented followed by diagnostic studies to confirm the diagnosis. The chapter concludes with pathophysiology and therapeutics, with a final section on key points. The figures are superb and contribute to the understanding of the material. The online book is simply the same book with the ability to make notes. The book does have limitations in its presentations. For example, of the 15 cases, only two patients are black; and of the extensive figures, only three figures are of black patients. Another shortcoming of the textbook is its portrayal of women. The male patients are primarily athletes while the occupations of the female patients are seamstress, yoga instructor, dancer, and homemaker.
Assessment: This book is a great resource for medical students or students learning orthopedics. It is too basic for practitioners and does not present new information. The organization is excellent and the ability to remember the information is enhanced by the author's writing style and organization. The book's citations primarily come from other books by the author.
