About the Author

Gary Andrae Hill is a native Texan, raised in a God-fearing home about 40 miles Northwest of Houston. Surrounded by love, family, and community, Gary began to hone his gifts of writing, public-speaking, and teaching at an early age. He attended Prairie View A&M University where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications, served in the Student Government Association and was initiated into Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. Upon graduating and following in his dad's footsteps, Gary began his career in education as a high school English Teacher, with the hopes of teaching young people the power they have in writing and the freedom they gain from reading.

Gary accredits his growth and life to the love he receives from his family, his friends, and faith. As a long term member of The Church Without Walls, he learned the power of a praying community and what it means to be loved unconditionally. His mission has always been to spread that love everywhere he goes through his testimony of courage, resilience, and purpose.

Living life in the intersection of Christianity and homosexuality while being black, has not always been roses and crystal stairs. From experiencing violence, alcohol abuse, domestic violence, divorce, depression and even suicidal ideation, Gary has always found his way back by remembering that God "is able to do exceeding abundantly above all I can ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us." Ephesians 3:20

Gary now lives in New York City with his best friend, his fur-baby, Fitzgerald "Fitz" Grant Kennedy Hill where he continues to pour into his community, grow in his faith, and make his mark. His hope is that his story provides someone the push they need to heal, to believe, to shine, and to move forward.
