About the Author

Leon Schlossberg has taught art as applied to medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has designed numerous biological teaching aids, including two widely used model skeletons, also available from the Johns Hopkins University Press.

George D. Zuidema, M.D., formerly Warfield M. Firor Professor of Surgery and Director of the Department of Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, is Vice Provost for Medical Affairs and Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan.

Description: The fourth edition of this anatomy atlas continues its format of combining illustrations by Leon Schlossberg with text authored by the faculty at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Purpose: It provides a basic guide to the structure and function of anatomical systems and specialized organs.
Audience: This atlas is aimed at students who are in the initial phases of education in the health sciences and who need a basic understanding of the area.
Features: The book comprises 29 chapters, each containing one or more pages of text followed by one or more illustrations. Some chapters provide basic descriptions of whole systems (e.g., skeletal, circulatory, lymphatic, endocrine systems) while other chapters concentrate on either specific organs (e.g., heart, lungs, liver) or anatomical regions (e.g., mediastinum). This edition includes new descriptions of the breast, prostate, liver, and a laparoscopic view of abdominal anatomy. A large anatomical display of a man was also included to emphasize areas of clinical interest. The color illustration is a frontal section and is accompanied by two labeled black-and-white illustrations.
Assessment: The atlas would serve any student who is seeking an introduction to anatomy. Other students may wish to refer to parts of the atlas for review. The chapters on the gastrointestinal tract and the menstrual cycle would be particularly useful in this regard.
