While the Ridgeback is praised for its suitability to the southern African environment, in which the breed was born -- and while the Ridgeback is known primarily as a scent hound, hunter and protector -- it is little known today that the Bull Terrier once, historically, fulfilled these same functions in southern Africa. There are also strong clues that the Bull Terrier contributed to the genetic make-up of the Rhodesian Ridgeback breed.
