Overview

In self-publishing your (e)book, do so as a professional author operating without publisher and/or agent. Ignore hearsay in the self-publishing community as well as unsubstantiated claims by self-proclaimed experts.

  • Quality—not quantity—of works mark a true professional.
  • Rushing a book to market is a mistake sometimes unrecoverable without extreme (costly) actions.
  • After publication release, your reputation is at stake for present and past works bearing your name.
  • Switching to a [new] pseudonym will not save you. You are then starting over in building reputation and readership.

These and other ill-advised practices separate a "self-publisher" [SP] from an "independent author" [IA]; These terms are not synonyms.

Become an IA through professional practices and publications of quality. The true measure of a (e)book valued by customers—only "readers" after a (e)book is "read"—is if the (e)book is read more than once by the same reader.

There is no greater mark of excellence and professionalism.

About the Author

J.C. Hendee has been involved in the publishing industry for 30+ years, including 13 years as a fulltime, contracted author in collaboration with his spouse Barb. [Penguin-Putnam / Penguin Random House]

From university through an M.A. in English and beyond, he advised, initiated and/or managed 17 specialty press and/or academic press serial publications. He has also managed many more book publications for other authors (fiction, non-fiction, and creative non-fiction.)

In graduate studies, he founded and administrated the serial anthology FUGUE: The Literary Journal of the University of Idaho; [College of Letters & Sciences, English Dept.] After 30+ years since its inception, this publication is still in print as of 2020.

He founded N.D. Author Services [NDAS] in late 2013 with an international staff of five living in different countries around the world. All have known and interacted (online) with J.C. for 12 to 30+ years. The staff is multi-ideological, representing animist, ásatrú, buddhist, islamic and secularist belief systems.

J.C. is the [contemporary] animist among them.
