Gr 3-7 Igloos have long been objects of fascination to readers, young and old. This highly readable book begins with a brief history of the groups of people usually referred to as Eskimos and their likely migrations. The Yues' descriptions of the seasons and their effect on the lives of the Eskimos are almost poetic. The text, accompanied by a profusion of detailed, well-captioned pencil illustrations, then attends to the engineering magic that was the construction of the igloo. The cross-section illustrations are especially useful in helping readers to understand the text. Details of family life within the igloo provide some of the most compelling reading and provide insight into the cultural aspects of Eskimo life. Throughout the text the Yues reinforce the simplicity and serenity of the Eskimos' lives that allowed them to coexist in harmony with the harsh environment and its natural rhythms. Information about food preparation, clothing, hunting, traveling, and other forms of shelter rounds out the text. The Yues end by indicating the negative influence wrought upon the Eskimos by the coming of miners, missionaries, traders, and other entrepreneurs.
