About the Author

Sheilah Mara, PhD is a behavioral scientist, consultant, author, and an advocate for health education and public health research. With more than 20 years of experience in the field of mental health, Dr. Mara offers a broad and unique perspective of clinical and programmatic issues affecting long-term care of seniors. Dr. Mara lives in the Washington, DC area and writes on a wide range of topics in behavioral health. She also consults with students and program staff on statistics and methodology, quality improvement, program evaluation and effectiveness, and grant proposal development. When she isn’t working or writing, Sheilah relaxes with one of her many hobbies such as listening to music, reading Jane Austen books or watching old black and white movies. She also enjoys walking, bargain-hunting with friends and astronomy. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Terry B. Thomas, Ph.D. is a retired licensed nursing home administrator, with more than 30 years of experience in health care administration. He has managed both private and government-operated facilities in Washington, DC. Dr. Thomas held senior executive positions under two of the District’s mayors and addressed many key healthcare issues in the city. In addition, he served on the Board of Trustees at the University of the District of Columbia, where he chaired the academic committee that approved training and degree programs in nursing. Dr. Thomas also played a key role in the implementation of federal nursing home regulations. He gained recognition as a planner, organizer, and public speaker. Since retiring, Dr. Thomas has found more time to enjoy fishing and listening to his extensive blue and jazz collection. He is also an avid viewer of televised Congressional hearings and political talk shows and follows news events on national healthcare with interest.
