Description: This is an excellent initial introduction to the hospital autopsy that is appropriate for general resident education. It is well written and enjoyable to read.
Purpose: It is intended to provide hospital autopsy instruction to both junior and senior pathologists and it is a well thought out manual of both how to perform an autopsy and a range of ancillary specialist techniques. However, it is not in depth or specialized enough to be a reference for senior pathologists with significant autopsy experience.
Audience: Although the authors indicate that this book is for both junior and senior pathologists, it is most appropriate for junior pathologists as an excellent introduction to autopsy.
Features: The book covers the autopsy procedure from beginning to end. The book is well designed and the format is easy to follow. In addition to being an excellent primer for junior pathologists, the book covers the history of autopsy and its role in medical education. The editorial comments regarding the decline in hospital autopsies are well thought out and highlight the importance of pathologists' involvement in improving this situation. The chapter on religious attitudes toward death and the postmortem examination is a good introduction to cultural differences. However, given that this topic is fraught with difficulties due to the infinite variety of personal attitudes toward death, the chapter should be considered only a general introduction. It must be remembered that each decedent and family must be approached as individuals and not identified just by their particular cultural norms.
Assessment: The book is excellent for junior pathologists and it would be a valuable addition to any resident teaching library.
