• Carter Godwin Woodson (1875 – 1950)was an African-American historian, author, journalist and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. The book shows the influence of the black church in America from colonial times through the early twentieth century. He describes how, after the Civil War, the church took on many other functions in the black community: religious center, Chamber of Commerce, educational facility and social center. Because the black ministry was one of the highest stations available to a black leader, Woodson includes short biographies of significant church members.
