SCOTT W. SEE is Libra Professor of History at the University of Maine. He is the author of Riots in New Brunswick: Orange Nativism and Social Violence in the 1840s (1993), as well as numerous articles and book chapters on aspects of Canadian history. He is currently at work on a book on ethnicity and collective violence in nineteenth-century Canada.
