About the Author

Brian P. Cleary is an American humorist, poet, and author. He is best known for his books written for grade-school children that explore grammar, math and poetry in humorous ways. In his role in the digital division of American Greetings, he's put words in the mouths of Dolly Parton, Christina Aguilera, William Shatner, Meghan Trainor and more. The multi-million selling author has performed poetry workshops in 500 elementary schools across the county. He lives in Cleveland, Ohio.
Jason Miskimins grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and graduated from the Columbus College of Art & Design with a BFA in illustration. He currently lives in North Olmsted, Ohio, where he creates illustrations for books and greeting cards.

Starting with more simple concepts like short and long vowels, titles begin to get more difficult, adding in ideas like consonant blends, digraphs, and diphthongs. The books include silly, rhyming sentences that demonstrate the concept being explored ("The witch in the ditch began to itch."). These get increasingly more complex as the book goes on. Each sentence is accompanied by a pleasing, cartoon-inspired illustration of what is being described with labels. These visual cues help support decoding and comprehension skills. A "Make Your Own" prompt, which asks readers to write their own story with the featured words, is included at the end.
