Overview

The underlying dilemma with experimental noise rock is that once a listener has heard a truly random assemblage of ear-splitting sounds...what's the point of continuing? That's the sort of trick that only works once. So the point for the best noise rock acts has to be how to harness and shape the idea of noise and randomness; paradoxically, the best bands in the style are the ones that are least free with the honk blat phwee. Which is a big part of why Bleach 03's The Head That Controls Both Right and Left Sides Eats Meats and Slobbers Even Today is, to use the most apt critical phrase, wicked awesome. An all-female trio from Okinawa, Bleach 03 are in fact as tight and disciplined as a 1970s funk revue. Drummer Sayuri and bassist Miya have impressive technical chops, but the key to these 15 songs is that they both play hard and in the pocket: with songs like "The Rule of the Peacock," Bleach 03 may be the only Japanese noise rock band it's possible to dance to. Guitarist Kanna moves back and forth between metallic shredding and an intensely rhythmic, choppy style that recalls vintage Arto Lindsay, and her unexpectedly melodic vocals add another point of entry for newcomers to the style who are unnerved by the unhinged screaming coming from other quarters. But even screamier tunes like "Get You" and "Not Peter" are so appealing in their rhythmic aggression (very similar to many of the U.K. post-punk groups of the generation of the Pop Group and the Slits) and sly riff hooks that The Head That Controls Both Right and Left Sides Eats Meats and Slobbers Even Today is approachable by anyone who finds the likes of Melt Banana just too intimidating. ~ Stewart Mason
