Description: Pediatricians and trainees have relied on this book since its inception. It is seen as the gold standard for quick reference and a resource for all pediatric healthcare providers on pediatric diagnosis and treatment. This edition also an excellent online accompaniment that contains direct links to the resources cited. The last update was published in 2014.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a reference and basic outline of common diagnoses and treatments for children. These subjects are appropriately covered and the online format enhances the ability of readers to find the primary literature cited.
Audience: As a book "written by residents, for residents," the main target audience is pediatric resident trainees, but the book also targets other pediatric healthcare professionals. The book is appropriate for these audiences and is credible due to its review by expert academic pediatric faculty.
Features: The book introduces and references a wide range of pediatric topics. Although brief at times, it is an excellent example of a handbook for trainees: enough information to complete the task at hand with references for further reading. Overall, the book has no major drawbacks. It could include more information or rarer conditions, but it covers the basic needs for a pediatric reference book.
Assessment: This quality book should be of interest to various levels of pediatric trainees and attending physicians, in addition to a broad range of specialists in pediatrics. Overall, this continues to be a tremendous reference for pediatric trainees and general pediatricians and continues to build on the successes of previous editions.
