About the Author

Melvin Prince Johnakin is currently President and CEO of ELT Ventures Inc., a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania economic development and community revitalization corporation with over 25 years of demonstrated success in designing and implementing cutting-edge strategies to provide economic empowerment to America’s distressed communities.

Born to a father Longshoreman and a mother of grace, wisdom and courage in a working-class community of inner-city Philadelphia, he saw at an early age what the social ills of America’s urban sector would bring in years to come. After losing his father at a young age, his family relocated to Schuylkill Falls, one of Philadelphia’s Public Housing developments. He witnessed firsthand urban, social and economic disenfranchisement. Drugs, crime, and poverty were not uncommon elements in his community. Beginning in his teenage years, Mr. Johnakin began to ask, “Why must our community exist under these circumstances? If we are to ever matriculate into a vibrant community of families, then we must own, maintain, and ultimately control the neighborhoods in which we live.”

Mr. Johnakin’s voyage through the world of entrepreneurship began with the creation of ELT Ventures, a Public Housing resident-owned and controlled holding company that manages various small businesses in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Today, ELT Ventures exemplifies the success of cost effectively using U.S. housing program investments and job training to provide financial stability and educational opportunities to distressed communities as a vital part of economic empowerment.

Mr. Johnakin received a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Leisure Management (Magna Cum Laude) – minor in Sociology from Cheyney University, Cheyney, PA; a Master’s Degree Business Systems (MBS) - Concentration Human Resources & Entrepreneurship, from Lincoln University, Coatesville, PA; and is a Doctoral Candidate in Business - Concentration Urban Planning, from Walden University, Baltimore, MD
