The Green Hills of Earth

We pray for one last landing
On the globe that gave us birth;
Let us rest our eyes on the fleecy skies
And the cool, green hills of Earth.

The Green Hills of Earth*is a collection of short stories from one of the masters of science fiction who has held readers spellbound for over thirty years. This collection includes “Delilah and the Space-Rigger,” “Space-Jockey,” “The Long Watch,” “Gentlemen Be Seated,” “The Black Pits of Luna,” “It's Great to Be Back,” “`-We Also Walk Dogs,'” “Ordeal in Space,” “The Green Hills of Earth,” and “Logic of Empire.”

The arching sky is calling
Spacemen back to their trade.
All hands!* Stand by!* Free falling!
And the lights below us fade.

Out ride the sons of Terra,
Far drives the thundering jet,
Up leaps a race of Earthmen,
Out, far, and onward yet -

We've tried each spinning space mote
And reckoned its true worth:
Take us back again to the homes of men
On the cool, green hills of Earth.

Editorial Reviews

JULY 2010 - AudioFile

Tom Weiner’s sonorous voice does little to breathe life into the 10 stories of this 1951 anthology of stories by the science-fiction master. These stories were entertaining and innovative in their day, but to today’s listener, the themes and style will seem worn out. In “Delilah and the Space Rigger,” the presence of a female communications engineer aboard an all-male space rigger challenges the dynamics of the crew. “The Long Watch” is a tense and dramatic Atomic Age tale that shows Heinlein’s skill at its top form. The collection has its high points, and on one level it is a classic, but on the whole it comes across as bland and dated, and Weiner’s tired reading does little to improve it.
