THE GREAT ACCIDENT BY BEN AMES WILLIAMS

Published by Complete Freedom Publishing.

Ben Ames Williams, (3/7/1889 - 1953) was first published on August 23, 1915 in The Popular Magazine with his short story "Deep Stuff." After that, his popularity grew slowly. Ben went on and published 135 short stories, 35 serials, and 7 articles for the Saturday Evening Post during a period of 24 years. After the Post took him, other magazines began eagerly seeking Williams to submit his fiction to their magazines.

Williams is perhaps most famous for creating the fictional town of Fraternity, located in rural Maine. 125 of his short stories were set in Fraternity, and they were most popular in the Post. Maine is also the setting for many of his novels.

The Great Accident focuses on Congressman Amos Caretall. He is a thoughtful, courteous, deceptively slow-moving man with a steel-trap mind. He loves everything about his hometown of Hardiston, Ohio except for the back-room saloons that prey on its weaker citizens. Caretall's only local political rival, smooth-talking smelter owner Winthrop Chase Sr., is running for mayor and aspires to even higher office. But as the Congressman knows, Chase has an Achilles heel: Winthrop Chase Jr., an otherwise intelligent and capable young man who drowns himself in drink. Just before the election, Caretall declares his intention to "back a Chase for mayor." In the year that follows, the plan he sets in motion results in positive change for Hardiston as a whole and young Wint Chase in particular.
