About the Author

Vernon Biever began his career in photography in 1941 as an eighteen-year-old stringer covering the Green Bay Pakcers for the Milwaukee Sentinel. In his half century photographing football players and games, he has shot six National Football League championship teams, the careers of fifteen Hall of Famers and every Super Bowl game ever played. His photos have appeared in virtually every major newspaper in the country, including the New York Times, Boston Globe, and Chicago Tribune, as well as in Sports Illustrated, Time and Newsweek. Biever lives in Port Washington, Wisconsin where he continues to cover the Green Bay Packers. Peter Strupp has written articles for numerous pulications including USAir Magazine, Science Fiction Review and the Milwaukee Journal. He lives in Boston, Massachusetts.

There are many unique things about the Green Bay Packers. One is that in the 1940s they were the first team to have their own staff photographer, Biever, who began his career in 1941 as an 18-year-old newspaper stringer. Over the years, his shots of Lombardi's Power Sweep or Forrest Gregg covered in mud have become very familiar to sports fans. Biever is still shooting Packer photos today, and in 1997 a retrospective of those photographs was published as the original hardcover edition of this work. This paperback edition includes pictures from the ensuing seven seasons. The photographs span over 60 years of history, from Don Hutson in 1941 to Brett Favre in 2002, with the lion's share of pictures covering the Lombardi era of the 1960s and the Brett Favre age of recent times. Each photo is given its own page, and the facing page features quotes from players or coaches that generally discuss the pictured player but do not describe the actual shot itself. This is sports photojournalism with a touch of art.
