The Girl in the Picture
Intro: Have you ever wondered about the one that got away? Is there someone in your past that you think may have been the one? Hindsight is 20/20, or so the saying goes. This is a bittersweet story of such a love. A young couple meets in high school, and years later, wonder what if? What if he or she was the one? Does everyone have just one soul mate? Is there such a thing as fate, really? Can we go back and pick up where we left off? Perhaps Thomas Wolfe was right, and we truly cannot go home again. Excerpt: Todd awoke early and looked around him. What the fuck am I doing? he asked himself. Today was Todd’s wedding day. He reached over and picked up his wallet from the nightstand. He pulled out the picture that he had kept in his wallet for the past three years. Todd looked at the picture of the girl he had loved for over three years now. He couldn’t remember when he had first known that he had loved her, but he knew that he did love her. But Todd was not marrying the girl in the picture. She had belonged to someone else the last time he had seen her. Todd was marrying Barb today, but the one person he longed to be with, and the only girl he truly loved, was the girl in the picture, and her name was Brenda. -------------- Todd first met Brenda when the two of them were in high school. Todd was a junior, and Brenda was a sophomore. Brenda was dating Todd’s best friend, Hank, at that time. Hank was a player and cheated on Brenda often, though Brenda was not aware of Hank’s many indiscretions. “I would never have done those things to you, Brenda,” Todd said, to the girl in the picture. Todd had witnessed the many breakups of Hank and Brenda, and every time they had broken up, Todd had been there for both of them. “Why didn’t I just tell you how I felt back then,” Todd said, to the girl in the picture. ------------ On that particular night, when Todd was driving Brenda home from their Tuesday evening class, somehow it was mentioned that Hank was not coming home for the weekend because the following weekend was the start of Spring Break at college and he planned to wait and come home for Spring Break. Todd’s eyes brightened, though Brenda did not notice. Todd said, “I’m going to a party Saturday night. You wanna come with me?” Brenda had made plans to go out with her best friend, and was also puzzled at Todd’s invitation. Didn’t he have a girlfriend? What did he expect Brenda to do at the party, sit and watch him and his girlfriend make out? Was he trying to set Brenda up with one of his friends? “Oh, I don’t know,” Brenda said. “You might as well. Hank is probably going out with someone else.” Todd had never said anything like this before to Brenda. It was hurtful to Brenda. Confused, Brenda turned to Todd, and asked, “You really think so?” Turning to look out of the car window, not wanting to lie to Brenda, but wanting to be with her, Todd said, “Uh, huh.” Brenda thought this was a very hurtful thing to say. What Brenda didn’t know was that Todd had fallen for Brenda, and somehow knew that if she saw his friends and how much fun they had on the weekends, she would realize how much nicer his friends were than Hank’s and that maybe by getting her away from here, Todd would summon the courage to tell Brenda how he really felt about her. Being with Hank for as long as she had, however, had made Brenda somewhat distrustful of others. She had been lied to a lot.
