Overview

Here are two of Burroughs realistic stories of life in the early 20th Century.

THE GIRL FROM FARRIS'S: "There are no good men," said the Girl with a cynicism born of cruel experience in the narrow lines of her sordid existence. To the Man, reared in an environment of luxury and knowing little of life's seamy side, this was incomprehensible. He was foreman of the grand jury; she, a member of "the oldest profession in the world."

THE OAKDALE AFFAIR: From the moment the mysterious burglar enters the palatial home of Jonas Prim in Oakdale until he stands beside a professional tramp as both are about to be lynched, this story contains melodramatics with a kidnaping, two murders, a horrible stalking thing, and a gypsy's death.

About the Author

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) had various jobs before getting his first fiction published at the age of 37. He established himself with wildly imaginative, swashbuckling romances about Tarzan of the Apes, John Carter of Mars and other heroes, all at large in exotic environments of perpetual adventure. Tarzan was particularly successful, appearing in silent film as early as 1918 and making the author famous. Burroughs wrote science fiction, westerns and historical adventure, all charged with his propulsive prose and often startling inventiveness. Although he claimed he sought only to provide entertainment, his work has been credited as inspirational by many authors and scientists.
