About the Author

About The Author
O. Henry was the pen name of the American writer William Sydney Porter (1862-1910). A native of North Carolina, Porter spent much of his adult life in Texas. He worked on a sheep ranch in La Salle county, and later worked as a bank teller, draftsman, journalist, and pharmacist. He was indicted for embezzlement stemming from irregularities at the First National Bank of Austin, charges he denied. After fleeing the country and then returning, O. Henry was sentenced to federal prison in 1898 where he began writing in earnest. His short stories proved popular and usually featured surprise or "twist" endings. After parole in 1901, O. Henry took up writing full time.
