Chapter One

It was a Saturday morning, but not just another Saturday morning. This was going to be a big day. The cows, Norman, Pearl, and Fern, were looking their best. The dogs, Lucy, Jack Jr., Jake, Joe, Millie, Winston, Susie, Barney, Lillie, Wally, Buddy, Reba, Gracie, and Abigail were jumping and barking. The cockatoos, Eddie and Pretzel, were whistling. The horses, Charlie Girl and Shoney, were running and playing in the field. The pot-bellied pig, Alice, was happy to be eating and sleeping. The frog, Emma, was jumping. The cat, Thomousina, was inspecting the barn to make sure it was clean and ready for the new arrival. Even the ferrets, Sylvia and Rocco, were happy to be playing hide-and-seek in their cage. The fish, Isabella, was swimming in circles. Everyone was excited.

Ms. Carrie's PB&J Farm was a very special place. It was a home for all lost animals. No animal was ever a stranger. Everyone was welcome. Ms. Carrie took care of everyone, and they all lived as one big happy family. Ms. Carrie was their hero.

Today was a special day, because someone new was coming to the PB&J Farm. Who? They didn't know. What? They didn't know, but they all knew that it was going to be another brother or sister. How exciting it was!

Now, Maxwell, the basset hound, was the family leader. He had been on the farm since the beginning of time, and he knew everything about everything. He even knew stuff before stuff happened. That day, Maxwell was keeping a lookout for the red truck.

Then, out of nowhere Maxwell sounded the alarm. Everyone stopped in their tracks and ran to their places. Everyone was barking, whistling, whinnying, mooing, meowing, and snorting. Then they saw the red truck. Ms. Carrie came out of the house clapping and lined everyone up, except Maxwell, who was standing next to her.

"All right everyone, get to your places," she said. Ms. Carrie was so happy to see the new arrival. She had been told that he was very special.

The gentleman opened the door. He seemed nice and took his hat off as he shook Ms. Carrie's hand. He walked to the back of the truck, let the door down, and leaned in to pick up the newcomer. Ms. Carrie's face lit up like the sun, and she held her arms out to hold their new brother. She turned around, and there he was. The smallest, cross-eyed pot-bellied pig you have ever seen. He gave one "oink," saying hello, and then he was quiet. He had a big smile on his face. At that moment, everyone began to bark, whistle, whinny, moo, meow, and snort as Ms. Carrie laughed and laughed. Yes, he was special.

That evening, the farm was quiet. Everyone had gone to bed tired but happy. It had been an exciting day. A new family member had arrived. As lights went out over the Farm, Maxwell smiled and dreamed of dog bones and treats. He knew that someone very special had come to live at PB&J. Maxwell had someone to protect.

That evening, Ms. Carrie started thinking about names. Names were special because they came from personalities. This little cross-eyes pot-bellied pig was different, she thought. There was something very special about this little guy. He was happy, he had personality, and he was very smart. He needed a proper name, a one-of-a-kind name that would stand out above everyone's. That night as he went to sleep, Ms. Carrie would give the little pig a magical name.

Chapter Two

The morning bell began to ring at the PB&J Farm. DING DONG, DING DONG! It was a beautiful, sunny day. Everyone had a list of chores, but first things first. It was playtime! Ms. Carrie opened the barn door, and everyone ran for the fields. This was the best part of the day. Everyone had a chance to talk, laugh, run, run, and run. Today the big news was about their new brother.

Joe, Wally, Gracie, and Thomousina were talking about the name. Gracie said, "I like Porky, after the pig."

Wally said, "I like Arnold, after the TV movie star."

Joe chimed in, "How about Oinker?"

Thomousina just hissed at all of them and said, "I know that Ms. Carrie already has decided on the name." They couldn't believe their ears. How could Thomousina know that? Names were always a secret until Ms. Carrie made the announcement at breakfast.

DING DONG, DING DONG! Saved by the breakfast bell! Everyone ran to the barn.

Now, music was constantly playing at the PB&J Farm. Music seemed to keep all the animals happy and wagging their tails. Breakfast was followed by chores, which were followed by a nap. Chores were hard work, but music made them easier.

This morning, Ms. Carrie did something different. Everyone wondered what was going on. Only Thomousina knew, or thought she knew. No music was playing when they arrived back in the barn for breakfast. The air was quiet.

Ms. Carrie made sure that everyone was in line. She was carrying something in her arms wrapped in a blanket. "Good morning, everyone," she said. "As you all know, we have a new addition to our family. I want you to meet your new brother, Henry P. Gruber." At that moment, Ms. Carrie uncovered the small pig wrapped in the blanket. At the same moment, everyone took a deep breath as their eyes grew the size of saucers.

"Oh my gosh," Jake said "He really is special. He has Ms. Carrie's last name and he has an initial P."

Henry P. Gruber was here to stay. Only Maxwell knew how important Henry P. Gruber was going to be to the PB&J Farm. Maxwell also knew that he had a lot of teaching to do. Henry P. Gruber was to become the next leader of the family.
