The Friendly Sausage is a fun and engaging way to teach young children acceptance for those who are different. It encourages children to include rather than exclude others which, I believe, is an important concept as they begin to form their first patterns of social behavior in preschool and early elementary grades.
The story begins with The Friendly Sausage meeting other foods and asking to play with them. But they won’t play with him because he doesn’t share their particular human attribute. For example, the Chicken Legs are racing and each wearing a running shoe. Since The Friendly Sausage doesn't have a leg and isn't wearing a shoe, he is not welcome to play with them. Later, all the other foods are in trouble and they need The Friendly Sausage to help. After giving him a chance, the other foods realize that they like The Friendly Sausage and want him as a friend. He accepts, of course, and everyone plays happily ever after.
