The Forgotten Commissioner: Sir William Mildmay and the Anglo-French Commission of 1750-1755
The failure of the British commission sent to negotiate disputed clauses of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle to come to terms with the French led directly to the Seven Year's War (1756-63), argues the late diplomatic historian Robbie, yet what little attention that has focused on the commission has failed to investigate the role and papers of one of the more important of the commissioners, Sir William Mildmay. She offers this work as a corrective, presenting a chronological narrative of the negotiations, based largely on the letters and other documents of Mildmay, granting him a more central role than previous studies.
