Narrator Grover Gardner tells the continuing tales of the Vorkosigan clan. The plot is not terribly complicated in this novella, but, like most of the series, is character driven. Gardner slips into the characters’ easy familiarity and banter as they try to unravel the mystery of the disappearance of the “rad bugs” —the bugs that are cleaning up the radioactivity in the exclusion zone, a legacy of war. Gardner is an engaged storyteller who maintains a lively pace and makes the most of Bujold’s sardonic humor. Fans of the series will especially enjoy this audiobook, although it can certainly stand alone. For new listeners, it offers a glimpse of why the series was awarded a Hugo Award in 2017.
