More than 300 articles in this volume span the first ten years of college football beginning with the first intercollegiate game in 1869.

The rules of the sport evolved significantly during this decade, as reflected in the articles about disputes over the size of the field, the number of players, and the style of play.

The first college football association was formed and the American game began to branch off from Rugby and Association Football (soccer) into a distinctive sport.

Walter Camp entered Yale in 1876 and was a standout teenage player before he earned his reputation as the “Father of American Football” in the ensuing decade. His athletic exploits are described in several articles.
