Description: This book describes ocular manifestations of systemic diseases in children.
Purpose: The authors tackle the worthy goal of providing a reference for ophthalmologists, to assist in understanding the extraocular manifestations of a condition, and to pediatricians and other nonophthalmologists, to assist in understanding the ocular manifestations they may see in their patients.
Audience: The authors are both pediatricians and ophthalmologists, and they are esteemed and accomplished academicians. They have assembled a group of strong contributors and insisted on having at least one ophthalmologist and one nonophthalmologist coauthor each chapter. The work is most suitable for practitioners.
Features: The authors aim to make the book encyclopedic, and start with a chapter on normal ocular development followed by 21 chapters covering practically every ocular condition that has systemic manifestations. The chapters are loosely based on organ system, but there are chapters that defy such a classification, such as those on prematurity, child abuse, infectious diseases, and vitamin disorders. In a work of this nature, the authors will always need to strike a balance between too much and too little, and they do. The strength of the book is its encyclopedic coverage. Practitioners can go to the chapters on chromosomal aberrations, inborn errors of metabolism, and systemic syndromes and quickly find the ocular and systemic manifestations of an extensive number of infrequent, but important, conditions that they may come across. The book is heavily referenced, which will greatly assist readers in pursuing further information.
Assessment: This will be an important reference for practicing ophthalmologists, as it provides an extensive volume of information on common and uncommon conditions. This information has not been so easily accessible from a single source. The book also will be useful to pediatricians and other nonophthalmologists interested in better understanding the ocular manifestations that they may see in their patients.
