The Extra-Ordinary Star

Book Description

In this touching rhyming book about family and friends, an ordinary star looks at all the wondrous things in the night sky. Why would anyone pay any attention to her when there are countless stars like her out there? But as she takes a harder look, she discovers how she, together with her family and friends, are more extraordinary than all the others.

Makes a great gift for ages 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and grades K to 2.

Inspiration For This Book

The following is 100% hokey but also 100% true. When Mr. Sun's younger son Ryan was born, Ryan had a hard time sleeping. Good or bad, Mr. Sun held Ryan to sleep every night. He didn't want to use his phone next to Ryan's head so he had a lot of empty time to drive himself crazy through boredom. Fortunately Mr. Sun is good at living in his own world.

As a father, he had a newfound understanding of something he had long grappled with, being told he was special. Growing up, he and those his age were often told they were unique snowflakes. He believed it, but after graduating college, trying to get a job during the dot com bust and then living in China for a year and a half, he didn't feel special and didn't think the world did either. That feeling persisted up until his oldest son Nathan was born. After holding Nathan for the first time, Mr. Sun understood that he was special, maybe not to the world but to Nathan (hokey but true).

While holding Ryan to sleep, Mr. Sun was reminded of that feeling and was inspired to write this book. Perhaps other parents can empathize with this hokey experience.
