About the Author

Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) was a Scottish physician and author who is best known for his novels and satires. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and studied medicine at the University of Glasgow. After completing his studies, Smollett worked as a ship's surgeon, and it was during this time that he began to write. His first novel, "The Adventures of Roderick Random", was published in 1748 and was an instant success. This was followed by several other novels, including "Peregrine Pickle" and "The Expedition of Humphry Clinker", both of which are considered classic works of English literature.

Smollett was known for his sharp wit and satire, and his works often aimed to expose the flaws and follies of contemporary society. He was also a strong supporter of the British government, and he used his writing to defend the administration and its policies. Despite his success as a writer, Smollett struggled with financial difficulties throughout his life and was often in debt.
