Overview

The 13 chapters of this text consider ethology (the study of animal behavior), its causes, and biological function, both as a discipline and for specific kinds of animals. Attention is given to the adverse effects possible in modern farms. Jensen (ethology, Swedish U. of Agricultural Sciences, Skara, Sweden) contributes chapters introducing the study of animal behavior and its applications; behavioral genetics, evolution, and domestication; and the ethology of pigs. Other chapters describe learning and cognition; behavioral disturbances, stress and welfare; and the ethology of fowl, horses, cattle, sheep and goats, dogs, cats, rabbits, and rodents. The contributors are researchers in Canada, Norway, Denmark, the UK, and the US. The book is distributed by Oxford U. Press. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
