About the Author

Elizabeth A. Capezuti, PhD, RN, FAAN, is the William Randolph Hearst Foundation Chair in Gerontology at the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing of the City University of New York (CUNY), where she directs the PhD in Nursing program. She is known for her work in improving the care of older adults by interventions and models that positively influence healthcare providers' knowledge and work environment. Dr. Capezuti's research interests include fall prevention, nonpharmacological approaches to improve sleep, palliative care, the geriatric nursing work environment, and the design of the "built environment" to facilitate older persons' health outcomes. Dr. Capezuti has disseminated the findings of 40 funded projects in five co-edited books and more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. She is the recipient of the Otsuka/American Geriatrics Society Outstanding Scientific Achievement for Clinical Investigation Award and the American Academy of Nursing Nurse Leader in Aging Award. She is an international speaker and consultant, including a Fulbright Specialist to Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. Dr. Capezuti received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Lehman College (CUNY), her master's degree as a geriatric advanced practice nurse from Hunter College, and her doctoral degree in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania.

Michael L. Malone, MD, is the medical director of Aurora Health Care—Senior Services and the Aurora at Home. He is a clinical adjunct professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Paul R. Katz, MD, is Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He is also Medical Director of the Monroe Community Hospital.

Mathy Doval Mezey, EdD, RN, FAAN, taught at Lehman College of the City University of New York and at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing where she directed the geriatric nurse practitioner program and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Teaching Nursing Home Program. Since 1991 she has been the Independence Foundation Professor and Director of the John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for the Advancement of Geriatric Nursing at New York University. Dr. Mezey is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, sits on the board of the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, and is Trustee Emeritus of Columbia University.

Description: The fourth edition of this encyclopedia is an excellent reference for those new to the field of elder care. The topics are broad and well defined and expert consultation brings evidence-based practice and useful resources to the topics.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a reference of terms associated with nursing home care and elder care in the adult care continuum. The authors meet those objectives by breaking down main topics into various subtopics appropriate to the implementation of the described practices. This book would be useful for those new to long-term care administration, social work, adult day services, or even hospice and home health.
Audience: The intended audience includes those in general practice and/or with a connection to long-term elder care, such as adult day care, hospice, home health, skilled nursing facilities, residential care, assisted living, etc. The authors are experienced in their fields. The references and resources also credit other reputable sources in the field.
Features: The encyclopedia covers a wide variety of elder care issues more related to social issues, administration, general clinical aging, and elder services. The definitions are broad in scope but clearly and efficiently explained in their subtopics. The additional web resources are excellent tools for those who want more information on specific aspects of subtopics. The index is complete and useful for quickly finding terms for any audience level.
Assessment: This edition has much-needed updated information. With the world of healthcare changing on an almost monthly basis, this edition provides updates on most new regulations and practices through 2016. For those new to elder care, this would be an excellent resource for the lesser-known issues of the adult care continuum services.
