About the Author

Carter Godwin Woodson (1875-1950) was an influential African-American historian and writer. The son of slaves, Woodson was the second African-American to earn an Ph.D. from Harvard (the first being W.E.B. duBois). Woodson was among the first scholars to study African-American history, and has been called "the father of black history."
