Overview

On the Duchess of Omnium's death, the Duke must look after his two sons and a daughter who, in turn, must see to their father's continuing social education. The Duke hopes that his heir, Lord Silverbridge, will acquire a respect for justice, self-sacrifice and honor, and, not least, a suitable wife. The rival claims of Lady Mabel Grex and Isabel Boncassen, the American granddaughter of a Dutch dockworker, symbolize the claims on the Palliser family: tradition against progress, codes of duty against natural feelings.

Those who have been following narrator David Shaw-Parker's journey through the Palliser novels have come to expect excellence, and they will not be disappointed with this concluding installment. The Duke of Omnium is now a widower, so we miss Lady Glencora's fine Scottish voice, but there is a new assortment of interesting characters for Shaw-Parker to bring to life. And he does so marvelously. Our old friend the Duke is now concerned with the marital plans of his two oldest children, his duty toward them and to his own heritage, and his duty to the country. This is Trollope, so we can pretty much count on a happy ending of some sort, but the trip is great fun, with a few tears along the way. D.M.H.
