Description: This is a collection of essays by various authors on the history, features, and treatment of depression in children and adolescents.
Purpose: The editor's purpose is to address the need for precise diagnoses for such children, and to incorporate recent scientific evidence about affect regulation, depressive subtypes and comorbidities, and current treatments. This book is needed, as advances in the understanding of depression from both an environmental and biological perspective have led to a flood of new information. The editor succeeds in addressing developmental aspects of childhood depression, but the book has less of a focus on treatment.
Audience: Although this book is not a complete guide as far as medication or therapy is concerned, it is appropriate for any mental health professional who works with children. The editor and various authors appear to be authorities on the subject of childhood depression.
Features: The book focuses initially and largely on developmental and environmental aspects of personality and emotion. It has chapters on neuroendocrinology, medication, and therapy, but the bulk of the text is devoted to theory and phenomenology.
Assessment: The book is of high quality in its writing and content. Although it is comprehensive in scope, the book is tilted towards theory and sociological aspects of childhood depression. It does have a fine chapter on both neuroendocrinology and medication, but these are rather rudimentary in nature.
