A teenager must grapple with burgeoning superpowers in this YA fantasy.

In Tennessee author Daree’s inaugural entry in the Death Reaper series, adolescent Amelie Weathers struggles amid both typical and extraordinary speed bumps into adulthood. At 19, she grapples with the fallout from an event when she was 7 years old: An “indiviym,” a set of special guiding powers, was transferred into her body. Normally, indiviyms are superabilities that people are inherently born with (water manipulation, memory editing, communication with deceased souls, etc.), but Amelie became the object of an extraordinary transference to become the “last pure-blood DeathReaper in the world,” and once people sensed it, she was shunned. Despite classroom bullying and derision from her own parents, Amelie slowly hones her abilities, like flying up into the trees, and she understands her ultimate destiny rises above all of the petty preconceived attitudes about her. Her parents, Julian and Lyn, are renowned scientists recently recruited by the Indivix lab corporation. This new endeavor forces the family to relocate, which brightens Amelie’s life since her new school, the Platinum Rouge, has other talented students with “Dark Class” indiviyms akin to hers. But as the last DeathReaper indiviym remaining, she must bond with ally Kane Blackwell, a spectral presence. Daree’s simple yet imaginative and magical story cleverly bonds Amelie with Kane as they share an internal superpower. Together, they must face many life-threatening challenges. Daree’s well-imagined worldbuilding creates an immersive read, though the actual abilities of those with indiviyms aren’t shown to their full potential. Perhaps these talents and details will emerge in forthcoming books. Still, the novel’s winning hero and its compact storyline will entrance YA suspense readers.

For YA fantasy fans, this debut is a riveting undertaking with room to grow.
