The author began with an interest in the relationship of folksong to working-class identity and consciousness. He used literature, folklore, and linguistics to develop a method for the study of subjectivity by focusing on the implications of the verbal strategies used by the narrators. Following several essays on methodology, the central sections of the book describe two industrial cultures: Terni in Umbria, Central Italy; and Harlan in the heart of the Eastern Kentucky coal fields in the US.
