The heroine, dominatrix Rosa Coote, most recently appeared in the comic book series "A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen." Another Victorian era book, "The Convent School," also includes her.
This is a nonstop Victorian spanking (flagellation) novel. It was serialized in "The Pearl" over 10 issues, from July 1879 to April 1880.
Rosa Coote is said to have been based on real life brothel keeper Theresa Berkley (d. 1839). Her establishment, on what is now Hallam Street in London, specialized in spanking. (Who said the world has gotten better?) She invented the BDSM apparatus known as the Berkley Horse. Her place of business is now residences.
At death, no heir would touch Berkley's breathtaking 100,000 pounds estate, which eventually escheated to the Crown. This was perhaps US $150 million in modern terms. Her executor reportedly found boxes of correspondence from the highest aristocracy, clients of both genders. He destroyed them.
