Overview

The Compression Garment Diaries is a collection of blogs written by the author upon learning she has breast cancer. Writing the blogs begins as a convenient mode to keep her friends and family up-to date with her diagnosis and treatment. What develops is an open and honest exploration into how breast cancer changes her perspective on life.

The blogs tell a story of all the uncertainties that come with diagnosis, treatment, recovery and survival. Her vulnerability is expressed with humour and strength. Her greatest support is the love she receives from her husband and her children.

Cancer is an unexpected gift that helps the author to realize the fragility of life and the importance of appreciating the moment.

About the Author

At the age of 42, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. With no known history of breast cancer in my immediate family, it was not a diagnosis I thought would happen to me. Shortly after this diagnosis, it was confirmed that I had Multiple Sclerosis as well. Dealing with one disease was plenty, but having two illnesses with no known cure was over-whelming.

I am blessed with a loving husband of 17 years and two wonderful sons, ages 14 and 12. Of course, no one signs up for the challenges that life throws at you, but I am grateful for my family and their constant support. What I have learned, is that if you are lucky enough to surround yourself with amazing friends and family, the battle is much easier. I am still coping with the lasting emotional phases of cancer, but each day is a new beginning.

To me, cancer was a gift. A tap on the shoulder to say slow down and enjoy the moment. It is coming up to two years since my diagnosis and I appreciate each day. People said I was brave; I say there was no choice. I needed to face the battle with positivity and determination. For my family.

Cancer has not slowed me down, it just woke me up!
