About the Author

David Remnick has been the editor of The New Yorker since 1998. A staff writer for the magazine from 1992 to 1998, he was previously The Washington Post's correspondent in the Soviet Union. The author of several books, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the George Polk Award for his 1994 book Lenin's Tomb. He lives in New York with his wife and children.

This extraordinary eight-disc set makes available to readers for the first time a complete searchable database of every issue of The New Yorker. To comply with current copyright laws, it contains every issue published over the last 80 years. This is not a "digitized" version but rather a "scanned in" version of the popular and influential magazine. The advantage is that viewers can see each issue exactly as it was published, displayed page by page with the original covers, cartoons, photographs, and full-color ads. The downside is that you can't "cut and paste" sections; nor can you search by key word or phrase through the entire database. You can, however, search titles, authors, or key words in the abstracts. The first disc, the "Viewer," contains the information for all 80 years of the magazine. The Search Archive allows you to search every issue by artist/author, department, year, or cover. But if you want to see any issues prior to 1998, you'll need to change discs. The awkwardness of the navigation is a minor cavil when compared with the pleasure readers will get from the opportunity to explore on their computers the rich compendium of 80 years of quality literary and artistic publication. Users will be dazzled by the variety and importance of the authors and artists whose work appears in the more than 4000 issues. Through an on-line registry, users can also get an updated Disk 1 that will include future issues and an updated index. The set also comes equipped with a wonderful book of highlights, including an introduction by the current New Yorker editor David Remnick.
