The Codicil

Telcommunications magnate Matthew Marshall is dead from a stroke; his wife and three children are stunned to learn that half of his $105 million estate has been bequeathed in a codicil to his will to a child they never knew existed, the product of an affair years before during Marshall's service in Vietnam.

The estate hires Adam Bruno, an ex-lawyer, street-smart son of a bookie, to find out if this child is still alive. Bruno knows how to negotiate New York's minefields of class, identity, and politics but is thwarted at every turn by the convoluted legacy of Matthew Marshall, whose closely held secrets constitute a nearly rock-solid façade. Bruno's job suddenly becomes more dangerous when old secrets surface and the heirs get desperate.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly

Topor's thriller concerns a deceased multimillionaire who has willed half his estate to the secret child he'd fathered in Vietnam. (June)

Library Journal

Move over, John Grisham. Topor's electrifying nailbiter, The Codicil, is a masterwork of mystery and suspense. Wealthy industrialist Matthew Marshall dies in a hunting cabin. His wife and family are stunned to learn that half of his $105 million estate is bequeathed-in a codicil to his will-to a child they never knew existed. The estate hires Adam Bruno, a street-smart former lawyer, to find the child, who may be the product of an affair dating back to Marshall's service in Vietnam. Marshall's closely held secrets resemble a fortress that Bruno must crack as every clue appears to lead down a blind alley. As Bruno makes headway, the heirs become restless. Bruno's job leads to danger when his office is burglarized and one of Marshall's old army buddies is killed. Narrator Dale Hull's fabulous performance does justice to Topor's outstanding drama. Highly recommended.-James Dudley, Copiague, N.Y.
