About the Author

Susan B. Katz is a National Board Certified Teacher and bilingual educator with over 30 years classroom expertise. She is the author of more than 50 children’s books, including over a dozen STEAM titles. Susan studied environmental science at the University of Michigan, School of Natural Resources and the Environment, and worked in a Costa Rican rainforest.

Each title sets the tone with images and descriptions of ecological disasters like Hurricane Ida, the Mosquito fire, and Hurricane Harvey. The author delineates the regions' typical climates and the shifts occurring due to climate change. These include hotter temperatures, drying lakes, droughts, and more dangerous storms. The author explains the difference between climate and weather and how human-made climate change creates a chain reaction leading to wildfires and mudslides. The books also describe the impact on the region's economic welfare. Readers will learn about measures being taken to stop climate change but will notice the lengthy list of solutions not yet being implemented. Back matter includes a quiz, glossary, additional resources, and index. VERDICT Eye-opening and informative. Highly recommended.
