As the first Latin church history, this work exerted great influence over the subsequent scholarship of the Western Church.

A edition of Rufinus' own continuation of church history in the fourth century added to his translation from Greek of Eusebius of Caesarea's "Church History", first published in 325. Rufinus says he relied on records and his own memory to carry the history forward from the end of pagan repression to 395, the year of the Gothic emperor Theodosius' death. The work as a whole, published on 402 or 403, was the first Latin Christian history and exerted great influence over Rufinus' contemporaries and later generations. Thoroughly annotated.
